It’s better for you

Quite simply, cycling’s one of the best forms of exercise there is. You can easily fit it into your daily routine too. In fact, start travelling by bike instead of by car, and the time you might have spent in the gym could be spent relaxing instead!

It’s better for all of us
It’s easy to see why when you look at our congested roads; all that traffic means more air pollution (causing asthma and other health problems), greenhouse gases (which contribute to climate change) and noise pollution. So by riding your bike instead, you’ll help do your bit to improve the environment for everyone. And don’t forget, a bike uses a lot less material and energy to make and maintain, too.

It’s quicker…and cheaper
Commuting by bike’s a brilliant idea – and here’s how it can save you time and money! To start with, around half of us travel less than 5km to get to work. Compared with a car, at that distance you’re more likely to get there first on a bike. With the cost of petrol, you’ll make quite a saving too. And while a good bike and accessories might cost £500 new (or less second hand), think how much a new car costs!

If you run a business remember cyclists are also absent from work less – so it’s worth encouraging your staff to cycle in. There are ways you can make money as well as save it, too – cycle tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourist industry!

It’s fun!
A day out on your bike with family or friends is a great way to get some fresh air, relax and take in some sights. And it’s a great way to start using your bike more.

There are lots of quiet, traffic-free tracks in greater Manchester and the surrounding countryside – so pack a picnic, map and basic toolkit and away you go! It’s safe and great fun for the whole family, especially little ones. For ideas on where to go, see our Routes / Maps section. Want something a bit more serious?

Your local BMX track is a great place to practise your backflips and spins, you could try competitive track cycling at Manchester’s Velodrome or explore some of the great mountain bike trails like the Pennine Bridleway.
